Drake Passage

The place. The Drake Passage does not forgive mistakes. Three oceans meet here, swell builds across thousands of kilometres with nothing in the way, and the cold does not negotiate. Sailors crossed it not because they wanted to, but because there was no other route — and ever since it has stood for a crossing whose length is never known in advance.

The format. From Drake we take the essence, not the coordinates: open distance with no finish line. No Cape Horn required — only the water you have (pool, lake, sea) and the will to keep swimming when the card shows no “finish” number. Drake Passage is the season’s marathon: kilometres with no ceiling, and everything you publish before the window closes counts.

How it scores. There is no target distance to “close”. The table ranks total volume inside the window among valid results. Verification rules and the gender split are in the Rulebook.

Window (UTC). From 00:00 on 21 July through 23:59 on 30 September. Only what is published to Drake Passage in that span counts.

The close. 30 September ends live result intake. Results out comes later — until finals publish, the table can still move.

Discipline without a printed cap: just over two months of optional volume that still has to verify, still has to respect any floor that applies, and still competes on who actually logged the most. Easy to picture as “just keep swimming”; harder to hold as a coherent plan across the same calendar that stacks Multiruns and a late Open fork.

The length is the feature and the trap: time to recover — and time to lose focus while Mako and Magellan pull attention elsewhere.

• Steady accumulation vs uneven surges — Regular slices vs periodic blocks; the window rewards whichever pattern life and proof can sustain.

• Front-half vs back-half emphasis — Bank kilometres early, or treat Drake as a late-season reservoir once Magellan opens; each trades fatigue against standing risk.

• Enter early vs enter late — Mid-season entry stays coherent, but Open still rewards time on the board.

• Commit vs stay out — A long open line with proof, or no entry on this race at all.

Drake Passage draws the long open line on the swim leaderboard: who owned the quarter on total verified distance. It rarely ends in one session; it settles when September closes UTC and totals freeze at Results out.

Until then, provisional distance can still move — and small daily gaps compound against whoever also entered Magellan.
