Open: there is no prescribed total to close. Scoring follows the mechanic — maximum total distance published inside the window among valid results, subject to verification and any minimum pace floor stated in the published brief (detail in the Rulebook).

Clock (UTC). The live window runs UTC, from 00:00 on 1 April through 23:59 on 30 June—a full quarter on one race clock. Only activity published to Nairobi inside that span counts; how the distance builds is up to the entrant.

After the window. 30 June closes the live phase; official standings follow later. A gap of a few days before Results out is normal; heavier verification can extend that. Provisional order can move until the race is Results out—see the Rulebook for Under review → Results out.

Discipline without a printed cap: months of optional work that still has to verify, still has to respect the floor if one applies, and still competes on who actually logged the most. The race is easy to picture as “just keep running”; it is harder to execute as a coherent plan across twelve weeks without burning out or drifting into noise.

The length is the feature and the trap: plenty of time to recover—and plenty of time to lose focus.

• Steady accumulation vs uneven surges — Small, regular slices of distance vs periodic blocks; the quarter rewards whichever pattern life and proof can sustain.
• Front-half vs back-half emphasis — Bank kilometres while motivation is high, or treat Nairobi as a late-season reservoir; each trades fatigue risk against standing risk.
• Enter early vs enter late — The window allows mid-season entry, but Open still rewards time on the board; starting late leaves fewer calendar days to answer leaders.
• Commit vs stay out — A long open commitment with proof, or no line on this race at all.

Nairobi draws a long horizontal line on the leaderboard: who owned the open quarter on total verified distance. It rarely “ends” in a single dramatic session; it settles when June closes UTC and the totals freeze at Results out.

Until then, provisional distance can still move—and with three months of runway, small daily gaps compound.
