Creature series. The mako does not cruise — it cuts. Phenomenal speed in open water — and the distance closes before the target knows the chase has started. Thirty kilometres ask for the same character and strength: not one burst, but a month of hard work. Mid-August into mid-September. The heaviest fixed Multirun of Season 263 Swim — a real challenge, not an easy one.

Multirun, fixed 30 km total, as many swims as needed inside the dates. Scoring follows the mechanic — best total time on the distance once work is verified (detail in the Rulebook).

Clock (UTC). The race is open UTC from 00:00 on 15 August through 23:59 on 15 September. Only swims published to Mako in that span count; how the thirty kilometres split across days is up to the entrant, within format and verification rules.

After the period ends. 15 September closes the live phase; official standings follow later. A gap before Results out is normal while verification clears. Provisional order can move until the race is Results out.

Thirty kilometres across roughly a month: more volume than Orca or Marseille, less calendar than a full-quarter Open. The distance still divides however you prefer — steady slices or heavier blocks — but treating it as “whatever remains after everything else” usually fails.

When Mako opens, August is already stacked: Orca and Marseille are live or closing, Drake Passage underpins the quarter, and from 1 September Magellan joins the open line. The thirty kilometres sit inside that stack — water, recovery, and attention all compete.

Front-load vs stretch — Bank most of the thirty while August still has room, or spread toward mid-September and accept a thinner margin once Magellan opens.
Many short swims vs fewer long ones — Tracking friction and fatigue trade against flexibility; the pattern only matters if proof and recovery hold.
Mako first vs open volume first — Kilometres published to Drake or Magellan do not count here. Same water, different hosts.
Enter vs stay out — A defined 30 km obligation with evidence, or no line on this race. Skipping the season’s heaviest fixed ask is a choice that registers.

A completed 30 km Multirun is a clean, visible line on the swim board: finished or not, inside the UTC dates or not. Late entry still works if the kilometres fit before 23:59 on 15 September UTC, but the field that started mid-August has already been moving.

At Results out, the race locks; until then, provisional standings may still move.
